Academy Open competitions drive forward Weightlifting participation in Wales

We have had a fantastic start to the Academy competition calendar, with three academy centres hosting the Academy Open at their local facilities.

These official BWL tier 3 events will register a lifters’ ranking and allows qualification for both Welsh and British Nationals.

The first round of competitions has been very successful, with many Welsh and English lifters attending.

The academies have included an option for new weightlifters to enter directly with the centre, to gain insight, learn about competition formats, build confidence and to gain positive first experiences. Many 11-16 year olds from another very success academy programme the ‘Raise the Bar’ scheme entered directly with academies to enjoy their first event in supportive and encouraging environment.

All events were held on Saturday 5th March, with close to 90 lifters competing over 3 academies:-

Strength Academy Wales

Weightlifting Wales is grateful to the academies for their hard work and time in organising successful and positive events, supporting the good work of the organisation.

The next Academy Open will be held on 7th May, which will make an excellent event for the Welsh Senior qualification, British events and for a range of lifters from beginner to experienced.

We are working with more academy centres to increase the opportunities of well organised local events throughout Wales.
