Take Part in Weightlifting & Para Powerlifting

Weightlifting and para powerlifting are dynamic, inclusive sports that are open to people of all ages and abilities. FAQ's

Do I need to be strong to start?
No. Strength is something you build over time.

What equipment do I need?
Just comfortable training clothes to begin with. All licensed clubs will provide equipment such as weights.

Is there a particular pathway I would need to follow within the sport?

There’s no single way to take part, as you can shape your own weightlifting/para powerlifting journey. This may be by:

  • Training for physical fitness
  • Progression to competitions to track your progress
  • Becoming a coach or technical official
  • Get involved socially and be part of a community, training alongside supportive, like-minded people

What age can by son/daughter start weightlifting/para powerlifting?
Weightlifting/para powerlifting is suitable for a wide range of ages, with under 12's being the youngest age category for competitions. Many clubs offer youth/teen sessions, while dedicated adults and masters (35+) sessions are also actively ran.

Is it safe?
Yes. All qualified coaches will teach the correct technique to suit your level and ensure all training are carried out with safety in mind.

Do you have to train everyday to see results?

It’s actually recommended not to train everyday and ensure you have rest days.

The ideal is every other day, or 3 times a week. This allows your body to rest and ‘repair’ itself, and it is during this time that the muscle increases.
