Celtic Nations 2023

The Welsh team travelled to Waterford, in Ireland on 17 November to compete at the Celtic Nation Championships 2023. An annual international team competition against Scotland and Ireland. Each country enters a team of 18 athletes, made up of six youth, six junior and six senior athletes. To determine the overall winner all Sinclair scores are added.

First we want to congratulation all the competitors, the standard of which climbs higher and higher each year. The commitment and dedication of the athletes were on full display, showcasing the incredible talent within the Celtic Nations.

Wales had two athletes achieving best Sinclair in their respective categories, Catrin Haf Jones and Charlotte Whalley. Catrin achieved the highest female Sinclair total of the day, and Charlotte achieved the top Junior female Sinclair total.

A shout out to Bryn Astrop, Thomas Duggan, Elin Haf Tossell and Mia Evans on making their Welsh debut out in Ireland. We are proud of how they performed under the pressure of competing on international stage.

The team broke an incredible 19 Welsh records, and two British age group records! These record breaking performances continue to highlight the growing strength of weightlifters in Wales.

As we celebrate the highs, we also share in the disappointment for those who did not manage to lift what they are capable of on the day. While setbacks in competitions may be disheartening, they should be viewed not as failures but as opportunities for growth. And we can’t wait to see them back on the platform.

Congratulations to all the athletes on their performances and a shout-out to their coaches for their hard work and dedication in preparation. A big thank you to Ireland for organising and hosting an incredible event – your welcome and hospitality made it an unforgettable experience. And finally thank you to all the officials and volunteers who make the events happen.

Congratulations to Scotland on the second consecutive win! The lifting standard keeps rising, and we are proud to be part of the Celtic Nations.

We are excited to host next year’s event – Scotland, take good care of the trophy for us!
