12 January 2022
The British Championships, held in Derby Arena over the 29th-30th January 2022 was the final qualifier for Welsh athletes to complete their campaign to earn a spot at this years’ Commonwealth Games, to be held in Birmingham throughout July and August.
There was excitement, pressure, fierce competition, lots of highs and some lows and we would like to firstly congratulate all those who competed in this event, the standard of which climbs higher and higher each year.
To those who have put their heart and soul into participating in the Commonwealth Games qualification process, a huge well done to you all. The past 12 months has not been without its challenges. Lifters and their coaches have worked tremendously hard to persevere and stay motivated throughout it all.
Special mentions to our British Champions Catrin Jones (-55kg) and Jordan Sakkas (-109kg), to silver medallist Christie Marie Williams (-64kg) and bronze medallists Ben Foggo (-61kg), Joseph Walton (+109kg) and to all other competitors, some who have been to many British Championships and some who made their debut appearances this weekend; well done!
Well done also to those who competed in the British Masters Championships over the same weekend, and congratulations to silver medallists Tracy Rosser and Helen Qualters.
It must also be said that it was a very tough day for others, and just as we celebrate the highs, we also share in the disappointment for those who did not manage to do what they are truly capable of on the day.
We now hope to look forward to the end of a challenging couple of years, and towards what 2022 has to offer to the Weightlifting community.
