Weightlifting Wales National Squad represents the highest level of performance within Wales. The programme is designed to support athletes with the potential to compete and succeed on the international stage, including major competitions such as the Commonwealth Games and European Championships.
Athletes selected for the National Squad are expected to contribute positively to squad culture and team environment, with a demonstration of professionalism, discipline, and commitment to training. Each lifter within this squad has earned their place through dedication, consistency, and a commitment to continuous improvement, delivering on high level of competition results.
National Squad athletes are typically invited to attend 3-5 training camps per calendar year, often held at high-performance venues like the Sport Wales National Centre in Cardiff, and Canolfan Brailsford Sports Centre in Bangor. In these camps, athletes will receive structured technical support from our National Head Coach, Gareth Evans, as well as our regional coaches. Another feature to the development squad training camps is guidance away from the platform too, through the support of; injury prevention sessions, nutrition workshops, recovery strategies, psychological development, anti-doping education, to name a few. These are often delivered by external partner professionals, such as the Sport Wales nutrition team.
Selection for the national squad is reviewed annually and are aligned with performance benchmarks and international qualification standards. Athletes must meet agreed criteria and maintain ongoing performance levels to retain their place within the squad.
