Catrin Haf Jones delivers her best ever Commonwealth Games performance

Catrin Haf Jones took to the platform in the Women’s 58kg category at the SEC Armadillo. Showing courage and strength, she recorded her best Commonwealth Games on her way to claiming sixth place.

Catrin Haf Jones produced a determined performance in the women's 58kg competition on day four of the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games (Monday 27 July), finishing sixth against a strong Commonwealth field - adding to her proud weightlifting achievements.

Competing at her third consecutive Commonwealth Games, following appearances on the Gold Coast in 2018 and Birmingham in 2022, the Bangor lifter demonstrated a strong resilience to harness her previous Games experiences, especially at Birmingham 2022 which didn’t go as planned for her. Lining up against a world-class field this year in Glasgow, Catrin embraced the challenge on one of the sport's biggest stages, continuing her proud record of representing Wales at the Commonwealth level.

Opening the competition in the snatch, Catrin successfully lifted 82kg on her second attempt after missing her opening lift at the same weight. She then elected to increase the bar to 84kg but was unable to complete the lift, finishing the snatches at joint 6th. Despite the initial setback, she remained in determined spirits heading into the clean and jerk.

In the clean and jerk, Catrin confidently opened with 106kg, securing the lift to move onto a competition total of 188kg. Looking to improve both her overall total and her finishing position, a 109kg on her second attempt was called which unfortunately was a no lift. Before trying to navigate between her competitors to given Catrin a chance at 4th place if she could lift 115kg for her final lift of the competition. The 115kg ended up being a little bit too out of Catrin’s reach, but her 188kg total was enough to secure sixth place in and record her best Commonwealth Games performance which she was delighted with.

This category was dominated by defending Commonwealth champion Rafiatu Folashade Lawal of Nigeria, who delivered a Commonwealth Games record total of 229kg to retain her title. Canada's Ann-Sophie Taschereau claimed silver with 215kg, while India's Bindyarani Devi Sorokhaibam completed the podium on 199kg.

For Catrin , Glasgow has marked a significant milestone in her achievements, and overcoming the setbacks she has experienced. After earning Commonwealth Games selection through consistent recent performances, including a personal-best total of 192kg at the British Championships earlier this year, she arrived at Glasgow in good form and determined to improve on her previous Commonwealth appearances which she outstandingly did.

Everyone at Weightlifting Wales congratulates Catrin on her performance, and everyone is so happy for her. Representing Wales at three consecutive Commonwealth Games is a remarkable achievement and reflects years of dedication, perseverance and excellence within the sport. She continues to be an excellent ambassador for Welsh weightlifting, inspiring the next generation of athletes while proudly representing Wales on the Commonwealth Games stage.

With more Welsh lifters still to compete in Glasgow over the coming days, the team will look to build on the strong performances already delivered and continue showcasing the strength of Welsh weightlifting.
