One of our Team Wales weightlifters for the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Madaline Connelly, has unfortunately had to pull out from the competition due to a recent injury.
Weightlifting Wales can confirm the devastating news that Madaline Connelly has unfortunately withdrawn from the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games due to a recent injury she sustained during the pre Commonwealth Games training camp at SBD last week.
Maddy had been selected to represent Team Wales in the Women's 53kg category, earning the opportunity to compete at her first Commonwealth Games.
While this is undoubtedly a disappointing moment for Madaline, we know her determination and professionalism will serve her well throughout making a strong recovery from injury, and continue to achieve great things in the years ahead. She has worked tirelessly to earn her place on Team Wales and has shown tremendous commitment throughout her preparation for Glasgow 2026.
Madaline Connelly gave the following statement on the withdrawal:
"Unfortunately, my Glasgow 2026 journey has come to an end. After suffering an injury in training, l've had to make the incredibly difficult decision to withdraw from the Commonwealth Games.
To say I'm disappointed is an understatement. Representing Team Wales on the Commonwealth stage has been a huge dream of mine and it's heartbreaking not to be lining up with my teammates in Glasgow and fighting for that place on the podium.
Right now, my focus is on recovery. I'll take the time to heal, work hard and come back even stronger. Although I won't be competing, I’ll be supporting every member of Team Wales throughout the games and cheering them on every step of the way.
Diolch to everyone who has supported me on this journey. It means more than you know.
Pob wc Tim Cymru."
Gethin Jones, Team Wales Chef de Mission, shared his feelings on this unfortunate news:
"Everyone at Team Wales is devastated for Maddy. We know how much representing Wales at a Commonwealth Games meant to her and the dedication, commitment and hard work she put in to earn her place on the team.
We know this setback won't define her. Maddy is a talented athlete with a bright future ahead, and we have every confidence she'll come back stronger. Beyond her performances, Maddy brings an infectious personality and a smile that lights up every room. She's developed into a brilliant public speaker and has been a proud spokesperson for Team Wales. We will miss seeing her compete in Glasgow, but she remains a valued member of the Team Wales family. We wish her every success with her recovery."
Maddy plans to still attend the Games as a spectator to help cheer on the rest of the Team Wales weightlifting athletes which would be great to see. We know that on behalf of the entire Weightlifting Wales community, we wish Maddy every success with her rehabilitation and look forward to seeing her back on the platform very soon.
