Weightlifting Wales welcomes the announcement from Commonwealth Sport that the 8th Commonwealth Youth Games (CYG) will take place in Malta in late 2027.
In partnership with Team Wales, we at Weightlifting Wales welcomes the announcement from Commonwealth Sport that the 8th Commonwealth Youth Games (CYG) will take place in Malta in late 2027.
Commonwealth Sport is the organisation with responsibility for the direction and control of the Commonwealth Games and Commonwealth Youth Games, and for delivering the vision of the Commonwealth Sport Movement: 'Our Commonwealth, united through sport'. Established in 1930, the Commonwealth Sport Movement brings together 74 independent nations and territories creating a diverse Commonwealth community of over 2.5 billion individuals, representing one-third of the world's population. Together they stand as a beacon of unity, diversity, and equality, completely integrating Para athletes, driving gender equality and advocating for legacy and social change through sport.
The 2027 Commonwealth Youth Games Games, which will bring together athletes aged 14–18 from across the Commonwealth, will see around 1,150 young competitors from the 74 nations and territories compete in eight sports. The programme includes Athletics and Para Athletics, Netball, Squash, Swimming and Para Swimming, Triathlon, Weightlifting, and for the first time at a CYG, Sailing and Water Polo.
The announcement reflects a continued commitment from the Commonwealth Games Federation to promote opportunity, inclusion, and youth engagement across all member nations – particularly in small and island states. Malta’s dual-island concept, (similar to the Trinbago Games two years ago), will showcase world-class venues across Malta and Gozo, supported by athlete villages located in hotels on both islands.
Simon Roach, Chief Operating Officer of Weightlifting Wales has shared his delight of this news of Weightlifting being chosen as one of the sports for the 2027 Commonwealth Youth Games to be held in Malta by saying:
"We’re thrilled that Weightlifting has once again been included in the Commonwealth Youth Games and it’s fantastic to see Malta named as the 2027 host. These Games offer an incredible platform for young lifters to gain international experience, represent Wales with pride and be inspired by athletes from across the Commonwealth. At Weightlifting Wales, we will be working hard over the next few years to support and prepare the next generation of talent for this unique opportunity."
Rebecca Edwards-Symmons, Chief Executive of Team Wales, said:
“We’re thrilled to see Malta announced as the host for the 2027 Commonwealth Youth Games. It’s an incredible opportunity for our young Welsh athletes to represent their country, experience high-level international competition, and develop both on and off the field. These Games play a vital role in shaping future stars, and we’re proud to support the next generation as they prepare for this exciting journey.”
Team Wales looks forward to preparing and supporting its athletes on the road to Malta 2027, continuing its commitment to developing young talent and promoting an inclusive and inspiring sporting future.
