XX Junior Battle Round Up

A team of developing weightlifters aged 14 to 22 travelled to Austria from 8 June to 17 June to compete for Wales at the XX International Junior Battle 2023.

This was scored by Sinclair total and included the following age categories: Under 15, Youth, Junior and Under 23.

The first day of the competition started with Grace Morris winning the Gold medal in the under-17 category. Grace Morris went 3 for 3 in the snatch, finishing on 69kg; this breaks her own U’17 and U’20 records. She went on to clean and jerk 90, unfortunately missing 93 on her final attempt.

Then Molly Greenwood finished day one with another Gold medal for Wales in the U'23 category, with an 80kg Snatch and a Clean & Jerk of 94kg. This 174kg total earned Molly the top spot on the podium and the highest Sinclair of the day.

Day two started with Llewellyn Waits making his international debut for Wales. Llewellyn snatched 65kg and unfortunately missed his second and third attempts at 68kg. He came in strong on the clean and jerks, finishing on 81kg. Llewellyn’s performance secured him a Bronze medal.

Luke Fletcher brought home another Gold medal for Wales going 6 for 6, finishing with a 105kg snatch, and 130kg clean & jerk. This performance earned Luke the number 1 spot on the podium and three U'17 Welsh records, breaking the total record by 15kg!

The U'20 category was up next with Edward Gibson and Daniel Davies securing Gold and Bronze respectively for Wales. Daniel had a great day on the platform with a personal best snatch of 102kg and matching his clean & jerk personal best of 130kg. This total placed Daniel in the Bronze medal position in the U’20 category.

Edward Gibson certainly made his mark out in Austria, going 6 for 6 and extending his personal best total by 13kg. This performance secured Ed the Gold medal in the U’20 category and 2nd highest male sinclair total of the day.

Ben Foggo and Garin Beams were up next in the Under 23 category. Ben went 3 for 3 in the snatches and hit a platform PB of 92kg. In the clean and jerks, Ben lifted 115kg making a PB total of 202kg and placing fourth in the group. Garin missed his snatch opening attempt but came back to nail his second and third attempts and finished with a 101kg snatch and then went on to hit 120kg clean and jerk. Garin’s total secured the Bronze medal in the group and a fourth overall Sinclair.

Weightlifting Wales would like to congratulate all the athletes on their performances, along with their hard work and dedication in the lead-up to the event. We would also like to thank the coaching team Christie Williams, Harry Nelms and Ania Negele as well as all the club coaches back at home for giving up their time to support the athletes day in and day out.
