Squad announcement selected to compete at the Commonwealth Championships 2024

Weightlifting Wales announces squad selected to compete at the Commonwealth Championships 2024.

Weightlifting Wales is excited to be able to officially announce today (Wednesday 17th July 2024) the squad set to compete in the upcoming Commonwealth Championships 2024, taking place in Suva, Fiji from the 17th to the 21st of September. The highly anticipated event for all competing nations will see the very best athletes from across the Commonwealth vying for glory on the international stage.

The squad selection for Weightlifting Wales followed a rigorous qualification process, with each athlete demonstrating exception skill, strength, and dedication in order to give themselves a place in the squad and a seat on the plane for Fiji. A team of seven athletes total the contingent that will form the team competing for Wales at this year’s championships, which includes five lifters who medaled at the recent British Championships. Therefore, the team will be hoping to continue that good form of recent performances into the Commonwealth Championships.

The selected athletes representing Wales are:

Women

• Nikole Roberts (55kg) - Junior

• Charlotte Whalley (59kg) - Junior

• Madaline Connelly (55kg) - Senior

• Catrin Haf Jones (59kg) - Senior

• Bethan Watkins (64kg) – Senior

Men

• Edward Gibson (89kg) – Junior

• Michael Farmer (73kg) - Senior

These seven Weightlifting Wales athletes will be supported in Fiji by coaches Gareth Evans and Christie Williams, alongside Team Manager for the competition, Christian Pszyk.

Christian Pszyk, performance pathway manager for Weightlifting Wales said upon the announcement of the squad;
