Supporting the Growth of Weightlifting – Sport Wales Be Active Grant secured by Evolve Weightlifting Club

One of Weightlifting Wales's licensed clubs, Evolve Weightlifting, has recently been successful in it's application for Sport Wales Be Active Grant funding.

Evolve Weightlifting Club, a licensed club under Weightlifting Wales which is based in Carmarthenshire, has recently been awarded funding from the Sport Wales Be Active Wales Fund. This grant aims to support the club's initiatives in promoting physical activity and community engagement through weightlifting.

The Be Active Wales Fund, managed by Sport Wales, provides financial assistance to non-for-profit sports clubs and community groups. It is widely recognised as a vital resource aimed at helping grassroots clubs expand opportunities for physical activity across the nation. This fund will provide such organisations the help to improve facilities, purchase equipment, and develop programmes that encourage active lifestyles.

The grant is a major milestone in Evolve’s development journey as a Weightlifting club, allowing it to further strengthen its facilities, weightlifting equipment, and long-term sustainability. Head coach at Evolve Weightlifting Club, Mathew Williams, show his appreciation in the receiving of the Be Active Wales Fund by commenting:

“We are extremely pleased to have secured funding from the Sport Wales Be Active grant. This funding has allowed us to purchase specialist weightlifting equipment to further develop and enhance our club. The additional equipment will enable us to:

  • Support more participants attending our club.
  • Enhance performance for our competitive athletes.
  • Host weightlifting competitions with high-quality equipment.
  • Ensure the club’s long-term sustainability.”

The new equipment will not only cater to a growing membership base but will also play a key role in raising performance standards among Evolve’s competitive athletes, but also help in creating new pathways into the sport.

Matthew continued:

“With the support of Weightlifting Wales, we’ve had a productive 2024, increasing participation and making the sport more accessible—particularly for young people through the hugely successful "Raise the Bar" initiative. We were incredibly proud to see this hard work recognised when the initiative won ‘Most Influential Campaign’ at the WSA Sports Awards 2024.”

Looking Ahead – Our Focus for this next year and Beyond

Evolve Weightlifting club remains committed to:

  • Growing our coaching team to develop and support the next generation of lifters.
  • Increasing participation in weightlifting and strength training to promote healthy lifestyles.
  • Supporting our competitive athletes to achieve higher performance levels.
  • Maintaining a welcoming, inclusive environment for all members.

Simon Roach, Weightlifting Wales strategy and development said:

"Evolve Weightlifting Club is a fantastic example of how grassroots weightlifting can thrive with the right support, dedication, and vision. Their proactive approach to increasing participation, developing coaches, and growing the competitive side of the sport is commendable. It’s great to see Evolve benefiting from the Sport Wales Be Active grant, which will help the centre to sustain and enhance their impact within the community. At Weightlifting Wales, we are proud to support clubs like this in making the sport more accessible, inclusive, and successful."
